Srinagar roadside vendor, who lives alone, was attacked by unidentified burglars in the Bohrikadal area of the old city. After thrashing him, the burglars decamped with one lakh rupees, the old man had kept for his last rites.
The 90-year-old Abdul Rehman who sells chickpeas (chana) on the roadside said he had saved the amount over the years for his last rites. “I desired with my own money, my last rites could be held properly and I would not become a burden on anybody in my last stage.”
He said burglars thrashed him and cut his pockets. “Due to my age I could not resist and they managed to escape after taking all the cash I had,” he recalled.
"I can identify one among them (burglars) if I come across them anywhere,” he added.
The neighbours of the 90-year-old man said the old man is living alone in his house. He has not married, they said.
Meanwhile, video of the elderly man, narrating his tragic story, went viral over social media platforms, the netizens have termed it as an "inhumane act and alarming” episode while demanding immediate actions against the culprits.
The nonagenarian said he has registered a complaint in the nearby police station. “They [police] have shown me some pictures to identify the perpetrators, but the pictures were not of those who looted me.”
Meanwhile, a police officer said, they have taken up the investigation of the case and a few suspects have also been questioned.
