Musharraf, president of Pakistan from 2001 to 2008, had been suffering from rare disease amyloidosis, caused by a build-up of an abnormal protein called amyloid in organs and tissues, a Dawn report said. Pakistan’s former president Pervez Musharraf, a four-star general who seized power through a coup in 1999 and oversaw that country during some momentous times, has died at a hospital in Dubai after a prolonged illness, reports said Sunday. He was 79. Musharraf, 79, had been undergoing treatment for the rare disease amyloidosis, caused by a build-up of an abnormal protein called amyloid in organs and tissues, reports in the Pakistan media said. Musharraf was in self-imposed exile in Dubai since March 2016 and was facing a treason case for suspending the Constitution in 2007. He was declared a fugitive in the former prime minister Benazir Bhutto murder case and the Red Mosque cleric killing case. Musharraf came to power after a military takeover of the government in 1999, serving as the chief executive of Pakistan from October 1999 to November 2002. He went on to become Pakistan’s tenth president in June 2001. He stepped down in August 2008 facing a possible impeachment. Born in New Delhi in 1943, Musharraf was four years old when his family migrated to Pakistan. His father served in the foreign ministry, while his mother was a teacher. He joined the Pakistan army in 1961, took part in the India-Pakistan wars in 1965 and 1971, and was over the years promoted to the rank of four-star general.Musharraf was believed to be the chief architect of the Kargil War that took place in 1999 shortly after India and Pakistan signed the Lahore Declaration.Pakistan’s former president Pervez Musharraf passes away at 79!
